KIPP DC Charter School

Delon Hampton & Associates (DHA) provided civil engineering design services for the new school on Benning Road. The school provides education for under-resourced communities and houses early pre-kindergarten, elementary, and middle school students. The project consists of a 51,000 SF elementary school, a 7,500 SF gymnasium and a 37,000 SF middle school enabling KIPP to consolidate the operations of two of its campuses into one. The school was also designed to with a multi-purpose play room, cafeteria, music, computer, and language rooms, plus a green roof with a play terrace.

The design of the building is a function of the long and narrow urban site. Barely 120 feet wide and close to 400 feet long, the site presented unique opportunities and master planning challenges for the design team. DHA coordinated with District of Columbia agencies to determine the unique urban site requirements that impacted the project. We reviewed design elements for utility sizing, grading, streetscape, setbacks, stormwater management, and water and sewer specifications. Using topographic and boundary survey information, DHA prepared a final project base map and assisted in the permit process.
